Victoria Villasana (Guadalajara, Mexico) is a Mexican artist living and working between Mexico and Spain. Her practice spans textile, photography, collage, and painting. She explores the themes of memory, identity, transformation, and connection.
Drawing on the language of textile, abstraction, and portraiture, Villasana investigates the intersection of personal and historical narrative, questioning the notions of belonging, cultural hybridity, femininity, and resilience. Textiles, traditionally associated with women’s and domestic work, become here an artistic and political language: a means to reconstruct memories, repair absences and transform what was considered invisible for so long.
Having gained international recognition for her embroidered interventions on photographic portraits and urban installations in London, Villasana’s practice has evolved toward a broader exploration of emotional landscape and ancestral memory. Combining traditional craft techniques with contemporary visual language, she investigates the connection between personal histories and broader social narrative. Her work often reflects on how histories—both intimate and collective—remain embedded within body, material, and cultural symbols.
Villasana has exhibited internationally in museums and galleries including: United Nations Headquarters (New York), Saatchi Gallery (London), Long Island Museum (New York), Zona Maco (Mexico City), Museo de Arte Popular (Mexico City), Museo Diablos Rojos (Mexico City), and S16 Gallery (Montreal). Her work has also been featured in publications such as The Guardian, The Los Angeles Times, Observer, The Telegraph etc.
She has collaborated with artists such as Rihanna, Fall Out Boy and Fito Páez as well as numerous international institutions and brands, including: United Nations, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts, Harvard University, History Channel, The New Yorker, Harpers Bazaar, Netflix, Nike, Golden Goose, Sephora, Hulu, Time Magazine, and The New York Times.
Through her multidisciplinary practice, Villasana seeks to create spaces of connection and reflection, using art as a means of reimagining histories, honoring overlooked narratives, and exploring the transformative potential of memory and human experience.
